There has been a lot of recent discussion in the Photo Booth Community regarding DNP 620 printer media tearing ribbons. As it appears to be widespread and a known issue since last Fall. DNP released a new DNP 620 firmware version, v4.33 in September 2024.
This article is meant to help you identify your current firmware version in your DNP 620 printer and how to update it if it is not the current release v4.33.
Prerequisites:
Download the firmware update file to your computer from the official DNP website.
Download the PrinterInfo application from the official DNP website.
Update Procedure for DNP 620 Firmware
1. Check Current Firmware Version

- Run the Printer Info application to check the current firmware version of your printer.
- Note the version displayed (e.g., 1.34).
2. Close Printer Info
- Close the Printer Info application before proceeding to avoid conflicts and potential damage to the printer.
3. Unzip the Firmware Update Tool
- The filename is DS620_v4.33_FW_Update_Windows_Sep24.zip.
4. Launch Firmware Update Tool
- Open the firmware update tool for your printer. Make sure to select version x64 for 64-bit Windows and x86 for 32-bit Windows.
5. Start Firmware Update
- Confirm the current version (e.g., 1.34) and the new version (e.g., 4.33).
- Click the ‘Start’ button to begin the firmware update.
6. Monitor Update Progress
- Observe the blue progress bar at the bottom of the firmware update tool. During the update process the printer will beep multiple times and the LEDs will sequence.
- Wait for the update process to complete.
7. Confirm Update Completion
- Once the progress bar finishes, check the top of the tool for the updated firmware version (e.g., 4.33).
- Ensure that the update has successfully completed before closing the tool.
8. Exit Firmware Installer
- Click to exit the firmware installer once the update is confirmed.
9. Run PrinterInfo to Confirm Update Success
- You should now see firmware version 4.33.
Cautionary Notes
- Ensure that the printer is not in use while updating the firmware.
- Do not interrupt the update process once it has started to avoid potential issues with the printer.
Your DNP 620 printer has the latest firmware, you should see a reduction in ribbon tears with new media. In addition to this you’ll also benefit from the rest of the changes in this release. These changes include:
- Countermeasure of the ink ribbon being pulled in by the overlap and close contact of the ink ribbon and the paper.
- Countermeasure for error that occur when initializing a specific brand-new ribbon.
- Some features require the complementary printer driver update to enable and use the functions.
- Provides backwards compatibility. Supports both new and old design printer mainboard chip sets.
- Optimizes the printer initialization routine to minimize media consumption at print pack reloading.
- Maintains the compatibility of the previous vintage DS620 printers with newer generation DS620 printers.
- Previously release firmware improvements are all included in the new release
- Corrects intermittent erroneous ribbon error when paper initialization with 6×4 and L size media that may occur when paper initialization with 6×4 and L size media that has been partially consumed.
- Improves the ribbon panel detection during re-initialization by using the renewed sensor data after returning from standby mode.
- L size or 3.5×5″ media is supported.
- Print finish type Fine Matte is supported.
- Throughput improvement for 300dpi Matte print and Partial Matte printing.
- Continuous Panorama Printing is supported.
- Add Partial Matte function.
- Counter measure for unexpected reboot.
- Partial change of the cut direction of scrap cut.
- Head position error is fixed.
- Print finish type Luster Matte is supported
- A5W size or 6×9″ media is supported
